SWRO concentrates for more efficient wastewater reclamation

Developing technical alternatives to increase the volume of remediated waters is a promising way alleviate pressure on natural water basins. However, extra energy consumed in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs), mainly powered by fossil fuels, hampers this strategy. This work focuses promoting efficient upgrading treated recovering within treatment process. The approach consists recovery and integration Salinity Gradient Energy (SGE) generated from contact between SWRO brines reclaimed wastewaters reverse electrodialysis modules. analysis opportunity implementing integrated processes Spanish WWTPs near desalination plants tackled. 16 SWRO-WWTP pairs have been inventoried, 10 them located Jucar Segura river basins, hot spot areas for reclamation. A gross power density 0.46 W/m2 (71 Wh/m3 water) SGE has wastewater, increased up 0.23 kWh/m3 most favourable scenario. Estimates freshwater withdrawals savings 434,387 m3/day selected installations are obtained. Decrease abstraction renewable source remediation process will contribute sources protection industry decarbonisation.
